Ball, John

(d. 1381)
   Rebel and Popular Economist.
Ball was an English priest who served congregations in York and Colchester. In 1366 he was forbidden to preach after he had been teaching a popular version of the doctrines of John wycliffe and by 1381 he was in prison. During the course of the Peasants’ Revolt, led by Wat Tyler, the rebels released him from gaol in Maidstone. He was present when the rebels murdered Archbishop simon of sudbury and he preached a fiery sermon based on the rhyme, ‘When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then the gentleman?’ With the young king’s promise of amnesty, the rebellion collapsed. Its leaders were executed and Ball, captured in Coventry, was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
